About Us

In the beginning there was the plight of the Vietnamese Boat-people attempting to flee to freedom over the South China Sea. In overfilled, decrepit boats the fate of thousands was decided, they became victims of storms or pirates.

In 1979 Christel and Rupert Neudeck, together with a group of friends, formed the committee "A ship for Vietnam" and chartered for the rescue mission the freighter "Cap Anamur" named after a cape off the Turkish coast.

The journeys of "Cap Anamur" (and her sister ships) were - against the predictions of many "experts"- a huge success: 10,375 Boat people were rescued from the sea and a further 35,000 were medically treated.

The incredible support of the German people, who with their donations achieved this victory for humanity, led to the decision to continue the work - also in other areas of the world.
Thus the committee "Deutsche Not Ärzte e.V." (German Emergency Doctors Union) was created and quickly a name was found: Cap Anamur.

Missions followed around the globe: Somalia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Eritrea, then Afghanistan, Vietnam and North Korea. The countries of Africa and Asia were where the emphasis of our projects lay. Until the war - and with it the hardship and suffering - returned to Europe: In Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia our doctors and nurses cared for the exiled and abused, our technicians built hospitals and schools, distributed aid and building materials. Help to self help, wherever possible.

Our doctors, nurses, builders and organisers work on our projects for a gross monthly income of €1100. All commit themselves for six months and many go on to lengthen their contracts.

After 23 years the leadership of Cap Anamur has finally changed hands: A new team will continue to work according to the principles and ideals of the founders. For the suffering in the world has not diminished, the madness of war not overcome. Therefore we stand on the side of the weak and oppressed and provide resistance against the supposed inevitable. Because our experience shows: One can do something....
